Extractions & Wisdom Tooth Removal in Norfolk

Patient smiling in treatment chair for dental extraction in Norfolk MA At Norfolk County Dental Care, we strive to save natural teeth whenever we can in order to protect the oral health and smiles of our patients. However, sometimes teeth extractions are necessary. Tooth loss leads to bone loss and can impact your remaining teeth and your appearance, so repairing a troubled tooth with a root canal, filling, or crown is often the least expensive and least complex treatment.

When a tooth cannot be treated or is causing problems like overcrowding or pressure against other teeth, we will likely recommend an extraction.

Our dentists in Norfolk, Dr. Xi Sun, Dr. David Iadarlola, and Dr. Dan Faibish will always keep your health and comfort in mind.

When Tooth Extractions Are Needed

There are a number of situations that can lead to needing a tooth extraction. Some of them include:

  • Infection
  • Split teeth
  • Teeth broken at the gumline
  • Teeth with previous root canals
  • Overcrowding
  • Impacted teeth

If you think you might need an extraction, give our dentist office in Norfolk, MA a call at (508) 528-6510 to schedule an appointment

Gentle Extractions at Norfolk County Dental Care

Removing a tooth can require a simple extraction, in which we remove teeth that have erupted (emerged) from the gums. Or a surgical extraction might be needed to remove teeth hidden beneath the gums.

After completely numbing the area, we gently rock the tooth to loosen it from the ligaments that hold it in place. Then we gently lift the tooth out and place stitches, if needed.

Options to Replace Missing Teeth

For teeth other than wisdom teeth, you will likely want to replace your missing tooth. We offer a number of options to restore your smile.

Dental Implants

Many people consider dental implants in Norfolk to be the best option to replace missing teeth because it replaces the entire tooth, including the root. Surgical placement of the implant into the bone encourages stability and longevity.

Implants do not move or shift, making them both reliable and aesthetic.

Dental Bridges

A popular non-surgical option for patients to complete their smiles, dental bridges hold an artificial tooth in the gap between teeth using two special dental crowns.

We offer CEREC dental bridges, making it possible to have your bridge completed and placed in a single visit to our dentist office in Norfolk.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Teens and young adults require an evaluation of their wisdom teeth to determine if they need extraction. Wisdom teeth can cause your other teeth to be overcrowded or misaligned, creating problems with the bite.

We sometimes perform wisdom teeth extractions in our Norfolk dentist office. For complex cases, we may refer our patients to a trusted oral surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our goal at Norfolk Dental Care is to preserve and strengthen your natural teeth. However, we also understand that tooth damage happens for many reasons, and we will take every measure possible to save an injured tooth. But when the damage is too much for us to fix, we will recommend removing your tooth, a procedure known as an extraction.

You may have several teeth extracted at once, depending on your unique oral health care needs. If you have a planned extraction, then we will set up your procedures to minimize your pain and promote quicker healing. For example, when we address wisdom teeth, we may remove them in pairs or extract all four teeth at once if they’re causing problems from which you need immediate relief.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Multiple Tooth Extractions?

Tooth extraction recovery depends on how complicated your procedure is. A simple extraction, where your Foxborough, MA dentist may vertically pull your intact tooth, heals most quickly with proper care. For this treatment, we begin by thoroughly numbing the area. We then manipulate the tooth to loosen it. Then we gently pull the tooth, leaving behind the space it used to occupy, called an empty socket. This socket is what heals as it closes, and maintaining the blood clot which closes your socket is a top care priority.

When a tooth is broken off at the gums or is impacted, meaning it has grown in sideways, we may need to perform a surgical extraction.

A patient with a severely decayed or damaged tooth may need to have the tooth removed.

Tooth extraction may also be necessary prior to orthodontic treatment if the teeth are crowded in the jawbone. If the jawbone cannot be expanded to allow the teeth to fit in the proper alignment, then tooth extraction offers another option to the orthodontist and patient.

If a tooth fails to erupt properly and becomes impacted, extraction is highly recommended. This often occurs with the third molars, or commonly known as wisdom teeth. Those third molars are prone to infection and other complications when they become impacted, and it’s best to have them removed.

A patient that has no alternative should take comfort in the technology available to replace an absent tooth.

Planning for Tooth Replacement

If your tooth does need to be removed, you should begin to plan the process of replacing it before the extraction takes place. Most patients want to fill in the resulting gap in the smile as soon as possible after they heal from the extraction.

If you think you may need an extraction, contact Norfolk County Dental Care as soon as possible.
